Looking for a Nutritional Snack? It’s POPCORN!

July 9, 2011 | In: Dieting, Weight Loss

Popcorn may not be the first thing to come to mind when you are looking for a nutritional snack, but here are 3 reasons to enjoy it as part of a nutritional diet:

1. 3 cups of popped popcorn is equal to 3 daily servings of whole grains. 1 tablespoon of un-popped kernels is all it takes ( and an air popper ). Whole grains are an essential part of daily nutrition. Popcorn is also a wonderful source of fiber. What easier way to get that nutrition in and enjoy them at the same time!

2. According to research by the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, popcorn has 4 times more polyphenols than cranberries ( and 3 times more than kidney beans – yikes! ). Polyphenols are heart and cancer fighting antioxidants.

3. Just don’t add butter! 3 cups of unbuttered popcorn is only 105 calories. Add butter to that bowl and you’ve more than tripled the calories.

So try popcorn as a healthy snack. It doesn’t take a nutritional counseling expert to see why!
