Article by: Pam Higgins, Certified Health Coach

Do you struggle during the work day with energy and find yourself reaching for coffee, donuts, or candy just to stay in motion? Here are a few tips to help get your energy going in the morning:

1. Set a regular sleep schedule that allows 7-8 hours of sleep. We all need adequate sleep to have enough energy during the day. Determine how much sleep is best for your body by going to bed at your normal weekday time on the weekend and waking up naturally (sans alarm) the next day. That will help you tune in to how much sleep you really need most days.

2. Drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning. While we sleep our bodies are doing work to maintain functions and recharge from the previous day, this utilizes water and energy. It’s best to start with water as your first beverage of the day even if you drink coffee with breakfast. Which leads to the next tip..

3. Eat a good breakfast before heading to the office. Give yourself at least 10 minutes to sit quietly and eat. A few healthy breakfast options: oatmeal with fruit and nuts; green smoothie with spinach, milk, fruit, protein supplement; scrambled eggs cooked with veggies (spinach, onion, broccoli, peppers); or even last night’s leftovers.

4. Breath. Sit down comfortably and close your eyes. Breath in deeply and let your lungs fill with air. Hold for a moment, then slowly exhale. Repeat 3 times. We tend to take shallow breathes most of the day, especially when stressed. This habit actually decreases energy, so practice taking a series of deep breaths throughout the day. This will help revive your energy and help you think more clearly.

5. Exercise first thing in the morning. Begin with just 10 minutes and increase to at least 30 minutes most days. Adding activity in the morning can kick start your energy for the day ahead. Working out in the morning also increases your likelihood of working out consistently.

In our desire to practice a much healthier way of life we are often met with the option that includes our diet since this is the major thing that affects our well-being. Quite a few consumers see the rewards of starting a vegan diet nevertheless much queries are still being inquired on its consequence and if this will certainly be right for you or not. So the question is: would it be a healthy lifestyle to go vegan or not?

First you have to comprehend what vegetarian diets and we can do this by identifying the different kinds in accordance with what they can and cannot consume. Leading the list may be the vegan diet which means to consume only the plant based food items. A vegan doesn’t eat meat, poultry, fish, milk, eggs, cheese as well as honey. A rigorous vegan also stays away from leather, fur, silk, wool, soaps and cosmetic that is derived from animal products. Other diets include lacto-vegetarian diets who can take in plant based food items, milk and also milk goods; Lacto-ovo veggie diets which is similar to lacto-vegetarian only with added eggs; and flexitarian diets or otherwise referred to as semi-vegetarians taking in just plant based foods or rarely or in restricted amount some meat, poultry and fish.

Most people choose vegan diet as it is perceived to come encumbered with the rewards of being less likely to risk weight problems and diseases like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, diverticulosis, cardiovascular diseases, renal disease, gallstones and a few cancers which includes lung and breast. The cause for the claim for low risk from all these illnesses is most likely because a vegan diet is low-fat and therefore very low in cholesterol intake. When you happen to be vegan, you have minimal cholesterol and loaded in intakes of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, phytochemicals and specific minerals.

Do you know that the stance of the American Dietetic Association in terms of the vegetarian diets or vegan diet is that often if it has been planned well it comes healthy, nutritionally sufficient and therefore becomes appropriate for everyone from all life-cycle. This includes pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood years, adolescence and yes, even athletes can gain a lot from this.

To be on a vegan diet you need the correct training of yourself particularly if you are fond of eating anything and everything. Keep in mind that any health routine done suitably well might be successful so prepare your diet first and start gradually until such time you know that you’re ready to go full swing.

Article by: Pam Higgins, Certified Health Coach

There are so many weight loss myths that fool those who are trying to shed unwanted pounds quickly. Here’s a couple popular myths to get you on the path to losing weight permanently!

Myth #1. Skip meals to lose weight

The Truth: Skipping meals teaches your body to hold on to fat stores to keep your body alive and keep normal bodily functions going. When you do finally give in and eat, the calories are stored because your body doesn’t know when the next meal is coming. This is called starvation mode and it slows your metabolism over time. Start your day with a healthy breakfast to get your metabolism going first thing in the morning!

Myth #2. Avoiding all carbs is the only way to lose weight.

The Truth: You body needs carbohydrates to function, in fact, the only fuel your brain will accept are carbohydrates. At minimum, your brain needs 130 g carbs per day. That’s not counting what the rest of your body needs to function. That doesn’t mean you need 5 bagels a day. You can get adequate carbs easily in your diet from healthy whole grains, fruit, veggies, beans, dairy, even a small amount in nuts and seeds. The best plan is to get your carbs from whole food sources as much as possible in place of processed foods that contain added sugars, refined starches, preservatives, and additives, which are best avoided.

Myth #3. Eat 3 meals a day and no snacks

The Truth: We are all individuals, a concept called, bio-individuality. One way of eating doesn’t work for everyone. Some people do very well on 3 meals per day, while other’s need to eat snacks in between meals. Those who eat 3 meals a day without snacking tend to eat larger meals. People who eat meals and snacks in between need to each smaller meals and small snacks to keep their body fueled throughout the day. It’s best to explore what works well for you by trying each method and evaluating how you feel. You can also get the support of a Health Coach whose an expert in customizing meal plans and healthy living.

A diet that is poor in protein will also go against your goal of increasing muscle mass. Weightlifting operates on the theory that your muscles hypertrophy or gain size as it recuperates from the micro-tears which comes about during exercise. Amino acids which come from protein sources are the building blocks of cells. It is generally advised to weightlifters to consume 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight and should comprise 40% of their diet. Good protein sources include lean meats, eggs, dairy, legumes and protein shakes. You have to remember though not to go above your daily requirements. When taken in excess protein can affect digestion, worse can damage your renal system.

Some wrongly remove carbohydrates from their diet. Carbohydrates are a readily convertible energy sources which fuel you energy and prevent your blood sugar from getting too low during and after a workout routine. It’s just a matter of choosing the right carbs.Food items with roughage, like whole grains and certain fruits are good sources which should be included in one’s daily diet. Vitamins and minerals are also necessary to maintain good balance in body fluid and electrolytes and for metabolic purposes.

The body needs Vitamins E and C for example are good antioxidants while the Vitamin B family is a precursor to a host of enzymes needed in the body. Weightlifters need to replenish their electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, which are lost through sweating. Adequate water intake is also necessary to eliminate toxins.

Some of those who do weight training prefer taking health drinks or protein shakes prior to starting a workout as well as immediately after it. This is because they feel that they can perform better when they don’t have the feeling of fullness they usually get from consuming a meal. These are also good nutrient sources and some are made specifically as meal replacements. An example of this is Shakeology which curbs one’s appetite and facilitates weight loss. It is commonly used as a means of detoxifying one’s system as well.

By mixing enzymes which aid in digestion, prebiotics, and whole food ingredients, Shakeology 3 day cleanse program rids the body of toxins and free radicals which are damaging to the body. Increased stamina as well as decrease in bad cholesterol count have been reported and documented among those who tried the Shakeology 3 day cleanse program.

An increasing number of health conscious people include a bovine colostrum supplement as part of their health and nutrition regimen. Colostrum is a higly nutritious liquid that is produced by mammals just before and after they give birth. Newborn offspring are susceptible to many diseases, which is why colostrum or first milk is filled with antibodies, minerals, growth hormone, vitamins and much more. The nutrients found in colostrum that give newborn mammals a good start in life have also been found to be of benefit to adult humans. So why do supplement producers use colostrum from cows? This is because, while human mothers only make colostrum for a few days, cows make it for longer, producing up to 9 gallons of colostrum, so the supply is large enough to produce colostrum supplements. What are the health benefits of colostrum? Colostrum helps strengthen the immune system, because it contains immunoglubulins These molecules contain proteins that help to fight disease causing pathogens. Clinical researchers have found that supplementation with bovine colostrum increases production of immunoglobulin A, which is known to subdue respiratory infections. Colostrums are known to destroy viruses, toxins, bacteria, yeast and parasites. Th growth factors in colostrum are great for helping to make lean muscle, and they can also aid in repairing damaged tissues. Because of this, many athletes and bodybuilders use colostrum supplements as part of their health regimen. Colostrum benefits also include pain relief. Colostrum has also been found to contain anti-aging properties, for example it can help keep the skin elastic, and provides extra energy. How do you make a choice among the many different colosturm supplements? People who are serious about their health are conscious of choosing their supplements wisely. This is why so many people are choosing New Zealand colostrum. What a cow eats will end up in the colostrum it produces. Colostrum, or first milk is highly concentrated, so if a cow is fed hormones or medicines, or the food it eats contains pesticides or other sprays, these nasty chemicals will end up in the supplements made from their milk. Unlike many cows reared in the United States, Britain or Europe, New Zealand cows are fed on pasture alone, and those that produce colostrum for supplements are free of pesticides and other chemicals. Supplement manufacturers also have access to a bulk supply of colostrum because in New Zealand, cows give calf just once a year. Because of this, milk containing the colostrum does not have to be frozen for transportation. An important thing to be wary of is the fact that many supplement producers dilute their colostrum products with skim-milk powder. This lowers the potency of the supplement. You are much better off purchasing supplements that are 100% pure colostrum. While top quality colostrum supplements may cost a bit more to buy, you don’t need to take as much and you get much better results. Colostrum is available in powder form, or as capsules or tablets. Colostrum capsules are convenient and easy to take, but colostrum powder is great for adding to a healthy morning smoothie, and it can also be sprinkled on your pet’s food to give them a health boost. Do your homework on colostrum before you begin using the supplements for health and fitness. Supplements are an investment in your health, so you want to get the best quality available.

One of the most popular workout programs these days is the Power 90 Extreme workout or just P90X. This is a workout that is based on the method known as “muscle confusion”. This method combines different movements coming from other workout strategies and modifies the arrangement of exercise and avoid the muscles from being accustomed to a workout to the point when the muscle doesn’t grow anymore.

P90X promises a toned body within 90 days by working out at home, that’s why this program became so popular. But the question is, does P90x really work as it promises?? The routines involve in P90X target muscle groups with different rotations of exercises and will definitely work for muscle development. But due to the fact that everyone have different body types and metabolism, the expected results may be different and the 90-day period might not be enough.

Regarding nutrition and wellness, the P90X nutrition program is comprised of phases that focus on different food groups such as protein-rich meals and carbohydrates-rich foods. Because fatty, salty, and processed foods are out of the picture, P90X works for anyone’s health. To engage in any workout, one must invest time and money like regularly visiting the gym and paying monthly dues.

The duration of P90X training is usually under 60 minutes and are done at specific times a week in a 90-day period. However, it may take longer for those who are new to any workout program as proper execution is required. Money, however, may not be an issue as the program can be done at home and only a handful of equipments may be purchased.

The individual should posses discipline and a determined character. Though P90X may be a good regimen, the important key lies on an individual’s commitment to the program. So, does P90x really work for everybody? Weighing varied considerations, it may well not be completely correct although the program certainly demonstrates potential. One only has to seek advice from a professional first to ensure safety. In addition, one also has to evaluate his dedication to the plan to achieve the ideal outcome.

If you are looking for ways to have a nice figure and a well toned body, it is very likely that you have visited lots of websites to learn about what good workout programs are available for you. The Beachbody company has launched two workout programs that guarantee weight loss in a very short period of time – the Insanity Workout Program and the P90X Workout Program. For those who haven’t tried to take part in any kind of conditioning programs, you might be thinking exactly how these two programs stand out from each other. This particular article will be focusing on the features and even differences of these two — P90x vs Insanity.

Overview

P90X is a workout that lasts for 90 days which likewise includes a diet routine anyone can observe very easily. This system utilizes the idea behind muscle confusion to lead to weight loss and even muscle development. In short, it will be necessary that you alternate the exercises you are doing every 30 days just to make sure that the muscles in your body does get used to the same exercises. As a result, your muscles will grow and will be developed faster. On the reverse side of the P90X vs Insanity battle, Insanity applies interval training in its weight reduction routines. it will only take you 60 days to finish this program, but it will need you to have more intense exercise routines.

Level of Difficulty

When you compare P90X vs Insanity in terms of difficulty, well they are both hard to do. However, for those who haven’t had any fitness training in the past, it’s more advisable to perform the P90X as it is less intense than Intensity. At the same time, this fitness program teaches you ways to integrate diet program in your fitness program, which is helpful in the long run. it is said that Intensity lives up to its name by being more intense than the other. This specific workout program is perfect for people who have been doing physical exercises for long periods.

Potential to Lose fat

The perfect question that you will have when choosing between P90x vs Insanity is which will make you shed more pounds. There isn’t any particular answer to this, though; since the results of either program are dependent upon how motivated you are to shed weight.

Bodybuilding is a very serious sport that entails rigorous exercise regimens, eating habits and nutritional understanding to allow good muscle development and sustainability. A bodybuilding diet plan will need to be protein abundant but well balanced with carbs and fats to ensure high-quality nutrition. Protein builds muscle however the bodybuilder additionally needs an optimal functioning cardiovascular system, good blood circulation and optimum organ health to reach the muscle size in this very competitive sport.

Fad and quick weight reduction diets are a trend in this world, and even though fast weight loss is accomplished, muscular strength, nutrition and healthy body function are sacrificed. Balance is the best bodybuilding diet plan and will be achieved using some fundamental natural foods.

Selecting complete protein foods which are lower in fat is often the biggest task in the muscle building diet plan. Regular animal proteins are loaded with high fats. Bodybuilders can turn to vegetable proteins using protein shake supplements as snacks to push the protein consumption to the ideal level. On average protein consumption should be a minimum of .36 grams of protein per pound of body weight making a 200 pound bodybuilder need 72 grams of protein.

The ideal low fat vegetable food sources can include white beans, green leafy vegetables, steel cut oatmeal, flax seeds, peas, cornmeal and lentils. Combining beans with rice produces a complete protein, a more dependable protein source that’s closest to animal proteins. Fish and chicken can add variety into the diet plan but should be utilized sparingly to ensure a reduced fat content diet. Clams are a good source of protein and are also lower in fat.

Vegetable proteins are additionally high in fiber so the system clears itself out faster and nutritional levels are enhanced. Meat centered diets are historically lower in fiber making this diet choice an additional reason to avoid animal based products. Very few bodybuilders are vegetarians, but if worked out correctly, the proteins in a vegetarian diet program can support the protein demands of heavy weight lifting. Protein supplements in the form of shakes and drinks can be a quick snack that is consumed on the go and completes any missing proteins.

A bodybuilding diet plan needs to be every bit as calculated as the very exercises that develop muscle tissue and mass. Without this kind of focus on good food practices, the bodybuilder is going to unsuccessfully feed the muscles while producing fat loss, an essential diet function to highlight muscles and their sculpting ability. Fiber, water and also the added vitamins and minerals in a vegetable diet plan will fuel a lot more in the body and build a protein abundant, nutrient rich internal environment.

Bill Pearl is a really well known and vocal top rated bodybuilder who in 1971 won the Mr. Universe title. His testimony and success as a steroid free vegetarian bodybuilder is the very best example of exactly what a vegetarian plan can accomplish.

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a whole grain from South America. The ancient Incas ate quinoa as their main staple and called it, “the mother grain”. Quinoa often makes it on Superfoods lists, read on to learn why.

Quinoa is a complete protein, like chicken or beef, this means it contains all essential amino acids. Most grains are incomplete that is why you often see beans combined with rice, because together they become a complete protein. Quinoa is not only a complete protein, it’s also a good source of important nutrients such as Iron, Phosphorus, Magnesium, and Manganese. A 1 cup serving contains 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. Eating quinoa in the morning to replace your typical breakfast grain will help you power through with more energy and staying power.

Cooking quinoa takes the same amount of time as cooking white rice, 20 minutes. Quinoa are tiny little white beads, other varieties include red and black with slightly different flavors. Quinoa has a natural bitter coating on it called, saponins; a natural defense against pests. Rinse quinoa well using a fine mesh strainer before cooking. Some packaged varieties are pre-rinsed to remove saponins. Cook according to package directions, the quinoa will expand to about 4 times its original size. You will get a light, fluffy, and satisfying grain perfect for breakfast, a vegetarian main dish, or side.

Adding quinoa to your diet is also a great idea if you are avoiding gluten due to intolerance or if you have celiac disease. Quinoa can be substituted for many gluten containing grains. Swap out gluten rich pasta and replace with quinoa or swap out bulgur and replace with quinoa to make a gluten free version of the traditional Mediterranean dish tabouli.
Treat your body to an alkalizing beverage first thing in the morning by drinking room temperature or lukewarm water with half of a fresh squeezed lemon.

We all know lemon as an acid, however, it has an alkalizing effect on the body. The body’s pH is a balance of acid/alkaline. Most of us tend to be too acidic which can promote chronic diseases and conditions including, acid reflux, kidney stones, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A simple daily habit of drinking lemon water can lower risk and help the body heal itself.

It’s important to rinse out your mouth or brush your teeth after drinking the lemon water, as lemon has an acidic effect when left on teeth and can erode tooth enamel. Remember the alkalizing effect is within the body. Other benefits include, aiding in digestion, tonifying the liver and kidneys, boosts immune system, and promotes weight loss.
