			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Eating too much sugar can result in higher blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. It&#8217;s recommended that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar daily and men are to consume no more than 9 teaspoons of sugar. A standard can of soda contains about 11 teaspoons of sugar. When reading labels, it&#8217;s important to know that every 4 grams of sugar is equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar. A can of soda with 44 grams of sugar contains 11 teaspoons of sugar (44g sugar/4 = 11).</p>
<p>Studies show an inverse relationship between sugar intake and HDL, otherwise known as good cholesterol. People who consume under 5% of their daily calorie intake from sugar have HDL levels in the healthy range, &gt;= 60 mg/dl. The average American consumes about 15.8% of their daily calories from sugar versus 10.6% on average in the 1970s.</p>
<p>So why are we consuming so much extra sugar? Read the labels of common foods you eat at home and on your next visit to the grocery store, notice there is often sugar in unsuspected places: breads, canned soups, salsa, crackers, processed meats, sauces, canned goods. Check labels on cereal and see just how much added sugar you are getting.</p>
<p>Increased portions also cause too much sugar consumption. We are eating more calories these days with increased portions in restaurants, leading to bigger portions at home. Also, eating non-whole grains such as white bread, white rice, and refined grain products including cereals, crackers, cookies, and chips. These are simple carbohydrate that are immediately converted into sugar as they are digested and assimilated into our bodies. This all adds up to more sugar in our bodies and resulting in increased cholesterol blood levels.</p>
<p>Head to a coffee house and notice that most coffee drinks are loaded with sugary syrups and sold in enormous sizes. Try to ask for less pumps of syrup or order less complex coffee and tea where you can control the amount of sugar added. Drink more water instead of looking to high sugar/high caffeine beverages for a pick me up.</p>

<p>There are many methods to losing weight, but most people turn to a specialized eating plan first, since this approach takes the guesswork out of deciding, &#8220;What&#8217;s for dinner?&#8221; Depending on your goals, you could choose a program focused on eating low-carbohydrate, low-fat, high-protein, no meat or even all liquid. <p><strong>THE FUNCTION</strong></p>
<p>Founded by Dr. John Walker, a gastroenterologist, the Walker Diet emphasizes low-carbohydrate consumption. Your body is fueled by two sources of energy: glucose and fat. Carbohydrate consumption promotes glucose in the blood by causing the body to release insulin. Your body will use that glucose for energy. By restricting carb consumption, you keep insulin levels low and cause the body to burn its fat reserves first.</p>

<p>The Walker Diet works in phases that aim to induce weight loss for a period of time before leveling out to a maintenance plan. The first two to four weeks is the Rapid Reduction phase, which severely restricts carb intake to initiate weight loss. The next couple weeks are the Continued Reduction phase, when carbs are gradually added back to the diet. Finally, you reach Maintenance, when you can eat carbs in a moderate amount to prevent the pounds from packing back on.</p>
<p><strong>THE FOOD</strong></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll fill your shopping cart with cheese, lean meats, eggs and Walker Diet shake mixes and protein bars. Unlike other low-carb diets, the Walker Diet includes a moderate amount of vegetables but limits fruits, grains and legumes. Dr. Walker emphasizes low- or non-fat cheese and lean meats to stress the importance of cardiovascular health. Higher-fat diets tend to contain more saturated fats, which are known to increase cholesterol levels above the normal range.</p>
<p>A day on the Walker Diet might look like this:</p>

<p>Do you struggle during the work day with energy and find yourself reaching for coffee, donuts, or candy just to stay in motion? Here are a few tips to help get your energy going in the morning:</p>
<p>1. Set a regular sleep schedule that allows 7-8 hours of sleep. We all need adequate sleep to have enough energy during the day. Determine how much sleep is best for your body by going to bed at your normal weekday time on the weekend and waking up naturally (sans alarm) the next day. That will help you tune in to how much sleep you really need most days.</p>
<p>2. Drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning. While we sleep our bodies are doing work to maintain functions and recharge from the previous day, this utilizes water and energy. It&#8217;s best to start with water as your first beverage of the day even if you drink coffee with breakfast. Which leads to the next tip..</p>
<p>3. Eat a good breakfast before heading to the office. Give yourself at least 10 minutes to sit quietly and eat. A few healthy breakfast options: oatmeal with fruit and nuts; green smoothie with spinach, milk, fruit, protein supplement; scrambled eggs cooked with veggies (spinach, onion, broccoli, peppers); or even last night&#8217;s leftovers.</p>
<p>4. Breath. Sit down comfortably and close your eyes. Breath in deeply and let your lungs fill with air. Hold for a moment, then slowly exhale. Repeat 3 times. We tend to take shallow breathes most of the day, especially when stressed. This habit actually decreases energy, so practice taking a series of deep breaths throughout the day. This will help revive your energy and help you think more clearly.</p>
<p>5. Exercise first thing in the morning. Begin with just 10 minutes and increase to at least 30 minutes most days. Adding activity in the morning can kick start your energy for the day ahead. Working out in the morning also increases your likelihood of working out consistently.</p>
