Ways To Boost Your Immune System

May 4, 2011 | In: Sports Nutrition

Our immune system works to prevent us from getting sick. It facilitates our body’s ability to heal itself as well. We become prone to illness, disease, and infection when it is weak. Measures should be taken to ensure that it is in tiptop condition because our health and our aging process is greatly determined by the strength of our immune system.

Many things weaken the immune system. Some of the reasons are improper nutrition, poor living habits, exposure to pollution in the environment, the overuse of antibiotics, physical and emotional stress, and the consumption of preservatives and other unhealthy food additives. There should be a conscious effort to support the immune system in order to promote positive health and overall wellbeing.

In order to do so, it is important to consistently supply the body with the nutrients it needs. Even more nutrients are needed to compensate for when the body is stressed by any of the aforementioned factors that weaken immunity. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and taking immune system vitamins will help greatly. Vitamin C is one of the most helpful vitamins that promotes strong immunity. This is because it directly fights bacteria and viruses and it is also needed for the production of adrenal hormones and lymphocytes. Also useful are Vitamins A, B, E, Beta-Carotene, Zinc, and Folic Acid. You can get these vitamins from apples, oranges, bananas, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, pumpkin, and strawberries. Salmon, walnuts, and other food that are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids are also useful.

It is ideal to supply the body with nutrients from food but this isn’t always the case. Good thing then that there are vitamins for the immune system. Supplements compensate for the lack of nutrients in a poor diet. It strengthens the body’s resistance to free radicals that trigger illness. Leading a fit and healthy lifestyle is ultimately the way to boost the immune system.

It is essential to get good sleep, exercise regularly, drinklots of water, and consume the recommended daily dosage of nutrients.
